Air Force Survival Training Manual – Free Download
Given that there are so many survival manuals out there, it’s hard to know which ones are worth having in your survival library. Well, if there’s one survival manual that I highly recommend it is the Air Force Survival Training manual.
The Air Force Survival Training manual (specifically the AFR-64) is, in my opinion, the cream of the crop. In fact, many of the numerous commercial and military books and manuals are based off of this manual (much of which which is copied verbatim — both the words and text!). I feel it is much better than the Army Survival Manual (FM 3-05.70) and even has a slight edge over Wiseman’s SAS Survival Handbook (which is also excellent).
Here is just a portion of what this 600 page manual contains:
- first aid for illness and injury
- finding your way without a map
- building a fire
- finding food and water
- using ropes and tying knots
- mountain survival
- concealment techniques
- signaling for help
- survival at sea
- building shelters
- animal tracking
- predicting the weather
- and much more…
I’ll be hosting a link to the PDF version of this text for as long as my bandwidth can take it (it’s 85 MB so it can take a bit to download). You can download it through this link: USAF Survival Training Manual
Although the PDF version is free, I highly recommend having a hard-copy version of this book (for obvious reasons). However, be aware that there are other versions of the Air Force Survival manual out there which aren’t the same. For example, they sell the next version (AFR-65) which is a watered-down version of this book. Instead be sure to get the AFR-64 version which can be found in the following link on Amazon (or other major booksellers):

Thanks for info but the link doesn’t work on Mozilla Firefox.
It worked, my fault, sorry. Great book. MANY THANKS
Thanks so much for this post. I’ve already read a few sections of the manual, and I’ve found them to be excellent. I learned about sharks, and making fire with a flashlight reflector and how to make fire using only a piece of dry bamboo (and I thought I’d heard of almost all the unconventional ways to make fire). I found it interesting to learn that most problems involving survival food poisoning are from being unable to preserve food, not from eating poisonous plants. This was an amazing find, and I thank you for your service in bringing it to us. Take care, and thanks!
P.S. For anyone who doesn’t have this downloaded, do yourself a favor and read some of it, and then, if I may suggest, add a comment telling something you learned, so we can look that up too. The manual is long, almost 600 pages, if I remember correctly, so it’ll take a while to finish completely. It really is amazing. Leave it to our servicemen to come up with an outstanding manual such as this. Take care, and be safe!

Excellent, Thank you for all the information you pass along to all of us. Keep up the good work.
I bought this book a few years ago. It’s well worth it, one of the best.
Hi,
When I click on the link just white page opens up.
Thank you
Hi Alina,
I just checked the link and it is still active. You’ll see a white screen while it’s downloading. Since it is a very big download, even with a high-speed connection it will take several minutes (~5min). If you are on a slower connection it will take a while longer.
Let me know if you are still having issues and I can email it to you. Just send me your email address via the contact link in the menu and I can send it through there.
Hi Tactical Intelligence,
It did download but as you said it takes a while. Sorry about it. I just thought that the download page was stuck or something like that. Thank you very much for getting back to me. I appreciate it. Great website BTW. I have bookmarked you.
Thank you.
You’re very welcome and thanks for the bookmark
Just wanted to say THANKS for all the info you have posted. I wanted to know about edible pine nuts, read someone’s comment on that page, which lead me to investigate other pages. Something big is happening in this world today and I believe that we soon will be on our own w/o these modern conveniences or/and be hunted and caged like wild animals. The only ones that I trust 100% are GOD and me – that’s it. Thank you again for helping me in the future!! If we should ever run across one another, I’ll be the one that smells like pine nuts and bark
Take care.
I was hoping to find a .pdf of AFM 64-3. It’s the one we used when I was up in Fairchild back in the early ’70′s.
Thanks for posting this version.
There is no download link at all
Bubba,
Please try again. Thanks
the link seems to take years to download properly on my connection. Any suggestions?
The PDF has loaded for half an hour and the page is still blue. What should I do?
flasher,
Unfortunately it’s a monstrous file so if you’re not on a high-speed connection it will likely take forever. Do you know what connection you have?
The other option is to purchase it on Amazon.
Wow…just downloaded 581 page pdf….looks great.
THANKS!
I’m a 24 year veteran of the USAF and attended both the USAF S.E.R.E (Survival, Evasion, Resistance & Escape) and Water Survival courses. They are OUTSTANDING and the manual is great. During the course the instructors demonstrated and we performed many of the tactics, techniques and procedures outlined in the book. They work! Highly recommend. I still have a waterproof, checklist style version that I was issued and carried in my aircrew survival kit. I still carry it when I travel.
Great to hear Todd. It’s my favorite survival manual out there.
It dosn’t work on my iPad
Thanks so much – am looking forward to reading / learning from this
I downloaded the PDF. Transferred it to my iphone. I have a Bio-Lite survival camp stove that creates a low voltage power supply. It has a USB port and is perfect for charging a small device (i.e. iphone). When the SHTF I will have this and many other documents for reference…
download it to your PC/lap top, then drag the file onto your itunes and it will show up in your ibooks app.
What a huge amount of information, and for free! Thank you so much! I can’t wait to dig into it!

Excellent manual, I can see why your feel it is the best survival manual available. So far, I have only had time to do a quick flip through, but will review it cover to cover over the coming weeks. I like the mental facets as much as the proven technical skills the manual offers. I realize that maintaining the will to survival is just as important as any other aspect of technical survival skills.
I am planning to check into having it printed and bound at the local printing shop. If they want too much I will revert to picking up a copy off Amazon. I do not want to have to rely on having a digital only copy if or when I am in need.
Again, thanks for sharing another piece of your cache.
Christopher
No problem.
Link keeps going to a codek pack or a PDF converter ad page.
